Sportsbox Visuals & Tracker Definitions
“Visuals” are found on the upper right corner of the 3D Analysis Screen of the Sportsbox Golf app. Tap on the 3rd icon from the left to access the visual elements that appear on or around the Robot avatar and measure various aspects throughout the golf swing.
Under Visuals, you will find a list of “Trackers” that you may select. A tracker is a biomechanical measurement -- a measurement of motion without regard to forces (position, speed, angle, etc.) of a joint, body segment, club, or ball throughout the swing — you may be familiar with the term “Kinematic Parameter.” It can be graphed as a single line in a parameter vs. time graph.
This is a guide to help you navigate our Visual tools, along with the definitions of the Trackers.
MID-HANDS: This traces the hand path of the golfer throughout the swing.
MID-HAND SWAY/LIFT: These are measured in inches. Sway shows the side-to-side path of movement, while lift indicates the up-and-down path of movement.
Mid-Hand Sway: The side-to-side motion of the point on the club shaft that is between the two hands. It represents the motion of both hands. Address is set to zero and away from the target past zero is negative and toward the target past the zero point is positive. It is measured in inches. From a practical point of view, it gives you an indication of your swing width on the backswing and downswing.
Mid-Hand Lift: The up-down motion of the point on the club shaft that is between the two hands. It represents the motion of both hands. Address is set to zero and down past zero is negative and up past zero is positive. It is measured in inches. From a practical point of view, it gives you an idea of how high and how low your hands travel during the swing.
Mid-Hand Speed: The linear velocity of the hands moving through the swing, measured in miles per hour. The hands reach their maximum speed before impact. This happens because the forces and torques created on the arms during wrist release in the downswing create an opposite force that slows the hands down. This Max Hand Speed value is an indicator that is available in the "Numbers" tab.
CHEST TURN/BEND/SIDE BEND: These are segment orientation angles that are measured with respect to the global reference frame (the world), but turn with the body. They are measured in degrees.
Bend:
• Measures movement forward to backward
• Forward is Positive (degrees)
• Backward is Negative (degrees)
Side Bend:
• Trail-Lead
• Trail is Positive
• Lead is Negative
Turn:
• This moves around the Up-Down Axis
• Open-Closed
• Open is Positive
• Closed is Negative
PELVIS TURN/SIDE BEND: These are segment orientation angles that are measured with respect to the global reference frame (the world), but turn with the body. They are measured in degrees.
Side Bend:
• Trail-Lead
• Trail is Positive
• Lead is Negative
Turn:
• This moves around the Up-Down Axis
• Open-Closed
• Open is Positive
• Closed is Negative
KNEE (LINE):
This is a segment line that displays the angles for Knees.
Trail/Lead Knee Sway:
This number denotes the side-to-side path of movement of the lead or trail knee throughout the swing. Toward the target is a positive value and away from the target is a negative value.
Trail/Lead Knee Flexion:
This number denotes the angle of the knees as they bend and straighten throughout the swing. A perfectly straightened leg should have a 180 degree flexion value and as the knee bends, that number will decrease.
CHEST SWAY/LIFT: These are measured in inches. Sway shows the side-to-side path of movement, while lift indicates the up-and-down path of movement.
Chest Sway: This number denotes the side-to-side path of movement of the center of the chest throughout the swing. Toward the target is a positive value and away from the target is a negative value.
Chest Lift: This number marks the up-and-down movement of the center of the chest throughout the swing. Up is a positive value and down is negative.
PELVIS SWAY/LIFT: These are measured in inches. Sway shows the side-to-side path of movement, while lift indicates the up-and-down path of movement.
Pelvis Sway: This number denotes the side-to-side path of movement of the center of the pelvis throughout the swing. Toward the target is a positive value and away from the target is a negative value.
Pelvis Lift: This number marks the up-and-down movement of the center of the pelvis throughout the swing. Up is a positive value and down is negative.
FOREHEAD SWAY/LIFT: These are measured in inches with the position at address as the zero point.
Forehead Sway: The left and right movement of a point in the center of the forehead. Sway away from this point is negative and termed Away (A). Sway toward the target from the zero point is positive and termed Toward (T). It is affected by both the side-to-side sway of the head and the turn of the head.
Forehead Lift: The up-and-down movement of a point in the center of the forehead. Lift (or drop) down from this point is negative and termed Down (D). Lift up from the zero point is positive and termed Up (U). It is affected mostly by the lifting and dropping of the head but can be affected by looking up or down.
TEMPO: This is an indicator that is shown on the 3D avatar screen. It is the ratio of the backswing time to the downswing time and for a driver, it is typically around 3 to 1. A good tempo helps create a powerful transition from backswing to downswing.
