What is Sway Gap?
Sway Gap is the horizontal distance between your Chest & Pelvis centers measured in inches. It is influenced by your chest center and the pelvis center movements. These two can both independently move towards and away from the target, and therefore the sway gap is an independent, dynamic number.
Why you should care:
Sway Gap is the one of the biggest contributors to your shot result.
Your Sway Gap has been found to significantly affect these key factors:
- Club Path & Swing Direction
- Low point & AoA
- Clubhead Speed
The "Perfect" Sway Gap:
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to the perfect Sway Gap—it truly depends on your unique setup. For example:
- If you set up with a neutral Sway Gap at address, aim to maintain a neutral Sway Gap at the top.
- If you have more Sway Gap at address, strive for a similar Sway Gap at the top.
There is no perfect sway gap number that works for everyone at key positions, however, here are some key check points to consider according to the instructor who coined the term Sway Gap:
The Different Sway Gaps of Different Pros.. and they're both right!
Shane Lowry and Corey Conners are great examples of top professional athletes who have very different Sway Gap numbers are important parts of their swing. While they look different, both are correct. Shane has a neutral set up and remains neutral, ending with smaller impact post impact. Corey has some gap to start with and at the top, and then he increases to almost 10 post impact. Both are perfectly unique to the type of shots they want to hit!
Want to check how your Sway Gap is?
In the Sportsbox 3DGolf app, you can track this with the Sway Gap tracker. A negative value means the center of your chest is farther away from the target than your pelvis whereas a positive number means your chest center is closer to your target than your pelvis center.
If your Sway Gap at Top is too close to 0" or even POSITIVE (chest center is closer to the target than pelvis center), that Is what is commonly known as “Reverse Pivot”. This move... can cause potential pain & lead to low power or a big gap will lead to low consistency & accuracy.
