Rory McIlroy: Busting the myth around sway
We often hear these two myths on the range:
❌ Myth 1: You shouldn’t sway in your swing
❌ Myth 2: Keeping your head still helps you move your body
But the numbers tell a very different story:

Rory McIlroy's Sway movement throughout his swing.
✅ Fact 1: Tour pros sway 1–3” in the backswing — with the head, chest, and pelvis (some even more).
✅ Fact 2: They start recentering early (between P2–P3) back toward 0”. Players like Bryson DeChambeau and Tony Finau even begin just before P2.
✅ Fact 3: 100% of tour players sway forward in the downswing. Average pelvis sway at impact:
-
- Men: ~4.5”
- Women: ~3.5”
That’s about 5–10” of total sway movement per swing. Scottie Scheffler, Sahith Theegala, and Jordan Spieth? Even more.
✅ Fact 4: The head doesn’t stay frozen — it moves up, down, and side to side throughout the swing.
