# Inside a Tour Lesson: How Dana Dahlquist Uses 3D Data to Coach Christine Wang

We followed Tour Coach and longtime Sportsbox Coach, **Dana Dahlquist**, and professional golfer **Christine Wang** to see how they use 3D data to identify movement patterns and create a clear path to change throughout a session.

Christine has been playing professionally for several years after a successful college career at USC. This season, she earned her **first professional win on the Epson Tour**.

At this point in Christine’s career, the goal isn’t to overhaul her swing; it’s to identify the movements that matter, understand what’s happening in 3D, and give her something specific to work on. Here’s a look inside one of their recent sessions.

---

### **Finding the movement behind the swing**

During their recent lesson, Dana was focused on Christine’s movement through the top of the backswing and into transition.

From her data, he noticed Christine was getting a lot of **chest lift** in her backswing. The height itself wasn’t necessarily the problem; the bigger issue was what happened next: Christine wasn’t lowering enough through transition, which affected how she moved into the ball

![](https://help.sportsbox.ai/hs-fs/hubfs/undefined-Oct-01-2026-09-46-53-3064-PM.png?width=599&height=360&name=undefined-Oct-01-2026-09-46-53-3064-PM.png)

As Dana explained, the lift numbers through the backswing and transition are connected. The pelvis and rib cage need to lower as the swing changes direction, while the lower body begins moving toward the lead side.

The focus for the session became fairly specific: **lower through transition, get pressure toward the lead side, and keep the upper body from drifting too far forward.** If Christine moved too far forward with her chest, it became harder for her to create the right side bend and extension she needed through impact.

Rather than looking at the swing as a collection of separate pieces, Dana could use the 3D data to understand how those movements were connected.

### **Tour Swing Reference: 3D Comparison with Adam Scott**

To reiterate his point, Dana pulls up PGA Tour pro, Adam Scott’s swing onto the Sportsbox 3DGolf app for reference. While Christine joked that her swing is extremely similar to his, the 3D side by side comparison showed one specific difference the naked eye would miss.

Christine and Scott had relatively similar pelvis movement, but Scott's chest stayed farther back through transition (by 1.4”). Dana noted that Christine was getting a little more forward with her chest during that part of the swing. Now, Christine not only has a clearer picture on exactly how many inches lower she should feel but also a visual example of what to emulate. The change they are working towards is becoming clearer and clearer.

---

### **Seeing Change in Real Time**

With the focus established, Christine went back to hitting swings while Dana monitored what was happening in the Sportsbox 3DGolf app.

They looked at metrics including **Lift, Sway, and Sway Gap** to see how her body was moving through the swing.

As Christine worked on lowering earlier, the numbers started to move in the direction Dana wanted. She was getting down more through transition and recentering better.

The change also showed up elsewhere. Her head wasn’t moving as far forward coming down, and her Sway Gap was becoming more negative. Dana could see that Christine was getting into a better position to move through the ball.

For Christine, the value was being able to connect the feel Dana was describing to what was actually happening in her swing.

“It wasn’t just, ‘try to stay back.’ I can actually quantify exactly **how much** to stay back.”
— Christine Wang

That’s an important distinction for an elite player. Instead of relying entirely on feel or video, Christine could see **how much** she was moving and **when** that movement was happening.

---

### **Turning the Diagnosis into a Goal**

Once Dana had identified the main movement he wanted Christine to work on, he created a **custom Sportsbox Goal** focused on her lift at the top.

Christine’s Goal included **P4 Top Lift**, supplemented with **Pelvis Lift at TOP** and **Chest Lift at TOP**.

The point wasn’t to make Christine think about every metric they had discussed during the lesson. It was to narrow everything down to one clear movement she could continue working on.

That’s also why Dana uses **[Goals](https://help.sportsbox.ai/what-is-goals?hsLang=en)** with his students.

“I like Sportsbox Goals because my students can have something to do when they leave a lesson and it’s like a teacher in a box, so they know they’re improving while working on the golf swing.”
— Dana Dahlquist

For Christine, that means she can leave the lesson with a specific focus instead of trying to remember every coaching conversation from the session.

---

### **Keeping the focus simple**

For a professional golfer, Dana is also careful about how much information he gives Christine.

She’s coming off a professional win and already has a high level of awareness about her swing. The goal isn’t to give her ten things to fix. It’s to identify the information that matters and make sure she can connect it to the shot she’s trying to hit.

That’s why the focus for this session stayed narrow:

**Lower through transition. Get toward the lead side. Keep the chest from moving too far forward.**

The rest of the data was there to help Dana understand whether those things were actually happening. Christine could stay focused on the movement and the shot rather than trying to manage every number on the screen.

---

### **What happens after the lesson?**

Christine can take the Goal into her next practice session and continue working on the same movement. Instead of trying to remember a long list of coaching cues, she has something specific to return to. Dana receives every swing Christine takes while she is away,  and he can use the data from those swings to see whether the change is sticking.

It's a much more connected process:

**Diagnose the movement → create a Goal → practice → see the change → adjust if needed.**

---

### **The takeaway**

A good coaching session doesn't always mean finding more things to fix. Sometimes less is more! Dana focuses on **one or two things that matter most**, giving the player a clear way to work on them.

For Dana and Christine, Sportsbox helps connect those pieces. The 3D data gives Dana another way to understand what's happening in the swing. Comparisons help Christine see the movement in context. Goals give her something measurable to take into practice.

For a player like Christine, that's the important part: she doesn't leave the session with more information just for the sake of having it.

She leaves knowing **what she's working on, why she's working on it, and how she can tell if it's getting better.**

 **[Full Lesson is here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBYp4nbx8HM)**

**Sway Gap:** The sway difference of your body. Sway gap can allude to swing direction; for a right handed golfer, negative sway gap from the top into downswing can lead to more right swing direction while a positive sway gap is more left swing direction.

**Chest Lift:** Vertical movement of your chest. It is set to 0 at address. It is negative when your chest is dropping lower than it was at address and positive when it is lifting higher than where it was at address.
